Jean Giraud (Moebius) 1938 - 2012

As reported on the BBC website and many other sources, the French comic strip artist supreme Jean Giraud (also known as Moebius) has passed away at the age of 73 after a long illness.

To my shame I've never followed his work too closely so I'll leave it to others to post a more knowledgeable and detailed eulogy. I first encountered his work, under his Moebius alias in the early issues of Heavy Metal where his Arzak strip appeared. (See example above.) Readers of British comics in the 1960s may recall that his first Lieutenant Blueberry story, Fort Navajo, was serialised in Valiant in 1965, albeit with some editorial tinkering.

As you can see, the styles used for Blueberry and that of Arzak are completely different, showing both his progression and versatility as an artist. He also had a humour style, as seen in this little flip-book I picked up in France in 1990...

Moebius was truly one of the giants of comic art and a master of the form.
